Practical Gardening Tips for Beginners

Gardening is a fulfilling past time activity. To some it is a longtime vocation, and is their livelihood. If you wish to engage in this often therapeutic hobby, you can learn how to garden fast and efficiently. Most seasoned gardeners started as you but today they are proficient in gardening. It requires patience and commitment. Expect also to get tired, soiled and disappointed occasionally. The bottom line is you should not give up. Below are some tips, which have been sourced from gardening experts. Read on!

Have a plan

What pushed you to want to practice gardening? Do you want to plant flowers or vegetables? Experts propose that you set from your bare garden. For those who have had experience in the past, this will not be a problem. However, for pure beginners, making a plan when you can hardly tell a dianthus from a daisy will not be a walk in the park. At the same, the internet is resourceful and what you do not know, you can fill in from the sources. For starters, start with a simple garden layout and less-demanding plants. This way, it will not be challenging for you.

Arm yourself with gardening tools

Gardening requires a variety of tools. You must go out and get yourself the necessary tools, that is, if you do not have them, yet. Shovels, hoes, soil scoopers, among others will come in handy. These tools are available locally in stores near you but they are also online. Just ensure that you are buying from credible suppliers. Always insist on quality. You certainly do not want to buy tools that don’t last beyond a single season. Gardening tools can be long lasting as long as you take care of them and store them in the right conditions.

Work on your soil

Prior to planting your flowers or vegetables, you need to improve your soil. Most plants do well in moist soils but also in those that are drained sufficiently. This means that plants require moist soils but not soil that locks in water. The best soil for gardening should simulate the texture of a well-cooked cake, which is crumbly but allows you to dig easily. If your soil is pure sand or clay, you will need to improve its texture.

By adding organic matter to the soil, its structure is improved. The result is a soil with optimal levels of moisture and nutrients.  In the sand soil, the humus increases the retention capacity of water by the soil; whereas in clay, the humus creates more pores to enhance water drainage. Furthermore, the organic matter allows more air to circulate for plants use.

Control pests from the very start

From the beginning, ensure that your garden is almost immune to pests.  Experts believe that you cannot get rid of all pests from your garden, but you can limit their numbers to a minimum. Some insects and pathogens are important for your garden. For instance, some microorganisms are responsible for nutrient cycling while some insects such as bees are excellent pollinators. For the best results, consider the organic methods of pest control. However, if you must spray, choose less-harmful products and those that do not linger in the environment for long.

Stick to annuals

As a beginner, working with some plants may be difficult. Experts recommend that you grow annuals. This is because they do not pose challenges when growing and they are readily available. As long as you implement the fundamental requirements of water, fertilizer and light, you can be assured of achieving success with these plants. After you have grown your first plants successfully, you can grow other sensitive plants.

For vegetables, grow from the seed

This may seem difficult for beginners. However, growing seedlings from vegetable seeds is an easy task, which even the novice can do easily. All you need is a set of containers and the right planting medium. Why buy the seedlings when you can make yours at home with less effort? You can later transfer your seeds to your prepared garden or a system of aquaponics. The latter is a new system that does not involve soil and is used for food production. Learn on how to DIY the systems from Click Here!/”> It is a well-outlined eBook for both novice and professional gardeners.

Understand the light levels of different plants

Unless you intend to plant the same plant throughout your garden, you need to know the light levels of the plants you have. If you live in a place where there are trees, you will have some shaded areas in your garden. Some plants, such as perennials, do not do well in places with low levels of sunlight.  Such plants will not thrive well in those areas. Hence, it is your responsibility to ensure that plants such as roses are placed where they can absorb sunlight easily.

On the other hand, if there is no shade over your garden, some plants will find it stressful. Shade and part-shade flowers and plants are designed to grow well in shaded environments. For these plants, either keep them indoors on the patio in containers or create shades in the garden for them. Some of these plants include hosta, cranesbill, foxgloves, astilbe, heuchera and columbine.

Choose plants well right at the garden center

Most garden centers place plants based on their light requirements. Be sure to read the tags applied on the plastic cans carrying the plants. This way, you will not buy a plant that requires high levels of sunlight, if you are unable to meet these requirements in your garden. Trees and shrubs also need varying levels of sunlight.  If the supplier has not applied a tag on the seedlings, do not hesitate to ask. It will save you a lot of trouble later on.

Gardening is not something only experts can do. Start small and within no time, you will have an amazing garden. Prepare your soil, choose the right plants, place them in the right conditions, and apply pest controls. It will certainly yield results of fresh grown vegetables. In addition, ensure that you have the right tools to make gardening easy and efficient. Lastly, start with annuals that require low maintenance.
